Mathias Goeritz

MATHIAS GOERITZ

(1915 – 1990)

Goeritz was one of the most versatile artists of the 20th Century. The diversity of his work —which ranges from sculpture, painting, and architecture to poetry and history— is not just a testament to his creative freedom, but also to his genius. His death in 1990 left behind an important legacy in several different disciplines, as well as an important tradition in public modern sculptures and plastic integration.

Along with his plastic work, through the Museo Experimental el Eco, Goeritz created and advocated for what he called “emotional architecture,” an architecture where space must provoke an emotional reaction through form, colour, and light. The Museo Experimental el Eco, a small but powerful building, was Goeritz’s only architectural work; he was also in charge of designing its furniture and interiors, and its strong influences from Fritz Lang’s expressionism are everywhere. Among the furniture designed for this museum, three different chair designs stand out. All three were once used by the museum personnel and by Mathias Goeritz himself. At Clásicos Mexicanos we have acquired exclusive rights to develop and reproduce these furniture, limited edition pieces, alongside Goeritz’s state.
