The GALA Chair

Agustín Hernández
1997

In his architecture as well as his designs, Agustín Hernández explores the multiple structural and formal possibilities of every material he employs. From stone and concrete to glass and metal, he forces materials to function in unexpected ways and thus define spaces, transitions, and surfaces. Formally, he draws inspiration from structures as monumental as pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican pyramids to simple, biological figures such as an echograph, or in the case of the Gala chair, an Agave plant. We admire this futuristic-looking black metal-and-leather piece for it condenses all these traits of Hernández’ creative process.
